Bali by the Numbers: Q1 2007 Arrival Figures for Foreign Arrivals Among the Strongest Ever to Bali.

(4/14/2007) Preliminary foreign tourist arrivals figures to Bali for March 2007 of 120,673 indicate that Bali arrivals are booming at record levels:

• March 2007 foreign arrivals at 120,673 are +43.47% ahead of March 2006 figures (84,109).

• Similarly, quarter on quarter arrivals show a +47.48% improvement for 2007 (348,452) versus 2006 (236,260).

• While the dramatic improvement in just one year is largely due to the depressed condition of Q1 2006 following the October 2005 terrorist attack, the Q1 2007 total of 348,452 foreign visitors nonetheless represents a new record in Bali arrivals. Future installments of Bali by the Numbers will look at where the visitors comprising these new record numbers came from and why larger numbers of current arrivals may still equate into fewer hotel room nights than lower arrivals numbers managed to produce just a few years back.

(5/19/2007) Amidst much concern among tourism industry professionals for poor length of stay and business share being lost to illegal villas, there's no doubt that in terms of overall foreign arrivals to Bali that "business is booming."

Total foreign arrivals during the first four months of 2007 totaled 472,082 and improvement of +38.38% over the same four months in 2006 and the strongest start to any year on record.

April 2007 foreign arrivals totaled 125,140 or +20.46% better than April 2006. In fact, the latest April figures were the best on record, stealing that honor previously held by April 2001 when 117,040 foreign visitors came to the island.

Bali's Top 4 Source Markets and the PRC

The graphics presented in this installment of Bali by the Numbers examining Bali's top four source markets for the first four months of each year from 2000 - 2007 show:

• Japanese arrival figures have recovered completely improving +57.53% in the first for months of 2007 (107,254) as compared to the same period in 2006. Japanese arrivals during the opening months of 2007 performed at near-record levels.

• Australia arrival numbers, while improving +56.65% for January-April 2007 as compared to 2006, still lag some -35.49% behind the first four months of 2005.

• Taiwanese arrivals finished the first four months of 2007 +9% better than the same period in 2006. A closer look at Taiwan's arrival patterns suggests recovery in that market is mirroring the pattern following the 2002 terrorist attack. All things being equal, expect strong performance ex Taiwan in 2007 and 2008.

• South Korea logged in the strongest opening on record for Bali arrivals, totaling 38,636 for the current year.

• The People's Republic of China may prove itself to be a "sleeping giant" in terms of Bali arrivals. Better flight connections and easier visa access saw 22,263 mainland Chinese visitors come to Bali in the first four months of 2007, up from a near-zero base just 7 years ago. Expect a 100% year-on-year improvement from this market for 2007.

ASEAN

Overall, ASEAN arrivals to Bali hit new highs during the January-April period of 2007, improving +39% over 2006 largely due to the advent of low-cost carriers serving Bali from Malaysia and Singapore and the visa-free visa facility extended to all ASEAN countries by Indonesia.

• Malaysian numbers led the ASEAN surge, improving +49.5% for the January-April period year-on-year – the best months on record from that market.

• Singapore is proving itself steady and true, improving +14.93% over 2006.

The Americas and Key European Markets

• While North and South America improved +12.8% during the first four months of 2007 as compared to 2006, arrivals from this market are still failing to achieve past glory, lagging -37% behind numbers achieved in 2000 and 2001.

• The U.K. Market is operating at levels similar to 2006, but still trailing overall by 42%-48% when compared to its more halcyon days in 2000 and 2001.

• German arrivals are on a par with 2006, but still playing "catch up" with 2000 and 2001.

• France is back with arrivals up +13.6% as compared to 2006 and setting new records for Bali arrivals.

• The Netherlands also demonstrates strong recovery improving +50.9% over the first four months of 2006 and performing at record levels.

• Russia wins the title of "new emerging market" for Bali improving +65%
during the first four months of 2007 over the same period in 2006. Destined to become a major source market for Bali, the Russian traveler is taking full advantage of easier visa formalities and better flight access to holiday in Bali.

Hallo Werner,

Deine detaillierten Daten, für die ich mich herzlich bedanke, stellen aber eines unter Beweis:

es sind nicht die Asiaten mit niedrigem Einkommen und einer kürzeren Verweilzeit, die die vorwiegend australischen Besucher ersetzen, sondern die Russen. Und die haben sowohl Geld als auch Zeit.

Von da her lassen sich die Schließungen der Hotels also nicht erklären. Allenfalls mit einem erheblichen Renovierungs- und Modernisierungsstau innerhalb der Jahre zuvor. Will nichts anderes heißen als: man hat die Profite der letzten Jahre verbraten, dringend erforderliche Reparaturen vor sich hergeschoben, und die sich ändernden Ansprüche der Reisenden einfach ignoriert.

Im Jahr 2003 (also nach dem ersten Bombenattentat) wechselten viele Hotels den Besitzer. Auch mein Lieblingshotel (ex Raddin, jetzt: Mercure) in Sanur gehörte dazu. So hatte der Anschlag in Kuta für die früheren Besitzer (meist Javanesen bzw. Balinesen) dennoch etwas Gutes: mit guten Werten innerhalb der Bilanzen erzielt man sicherlich höhere Verkaufs- oder Pachterlöse. Die unterlassenen Renovierungen wurden einfach verschwiegen, wenn es eben ging.

Stress bei Anbietern von Indonesien Rundreisen. Nachdem die EU alle lokalen Airlines als unsicher eingestuft hat, müssen Veranstalter und Reisebüros nach Alternativen suchen.

Schnelles Handeln war angesagt als die EU Anfang Juli ihre neue schwarze Liste veröffentlichte.
Denn erstmals waren dort auch Airlines aufgeführt die deutsche Urlauber auf Rundreisen über die Inselwelt Indonesiens benutzen.
"Solange das so ist, hat das Land ein Problem!" sagt Horst Leibacher von Lotus Travel.
Ähnlich denken andere Asien Reisespezialisten.Urlauber die Kombinationen Java mit Bali oder Lombok gebucht haben sind besonders betroffen.
Die werden jetzt mit den Bus bis zur Ostküste gefahren und von dort aus setzen sie mit der Fähre über.
Ähnlich löst Studiosus das Problem. Mehrkosten übernehmen noch die Veranstalter.
Pläne für ein Ausbau des Indonesien Programms landen aber bei allen Veranstaltern in der Schublade.
Reisebüros müssen Kunden deutlich darauf hinweisen wenn eine Airline innerhalb der EU keine Betribserlaubniss hat.
Mitarbeiter von Reisebüros können sich eine Menge Ärger einhandeln wenn sie solche Tickets verkaufen.
Eine Freistellungserklärung kann helfen gibt aber keine 100% Sicherheit.

Meine erste und auch schönste und interessanteste Reise war eine 10-Tages-Tour per Bus von Bandung/Java nach Bali und Lombok und zurück. Soviele Eindrücke von dem wirklichen Leben der Indonesier kann man per Flug und Hotelaufenthalt nicht bekommen. Vorteilhaft war auch, dass ich der einzige Ausländer der Reisegruppe war, aber mit meiner Frau auch eine Dolmetscherin dabei hatte. Das war 1993 und kostete damals insgesamt 500 US$ inkl. Hotelübernachtungen mit Frühstück, Obst unterwegs an den vielen Ständen gegen ein paar rupiah. Köstliches Mittagessen gabs immer in sauberen kleinen Warungs. Diese Reise würde ich gern noch mal machen.
Und damals habe ich beschlossen, als Rentner dort zu überwintern. Wegen der späteren Unruhen und der Verfolgung und Massakrierung von Menschen chinesischer Abstammung sind wir dann in Bali gelandet.

Bali by the Numbers: January – June 2007 Arrivals the Strongest First-Half Ever in Bali Tourism.

(7/28/2007) Bali ended the first six months of 2007 with 745,494 foreign arrivals, a +35% improvement over the previous year, making the first semester of 2007 the strongest start ever for the island's tourism industry. Previously, that record was held by the year 2001 when 680,881 foreign visitors came to Bali in the January-June period; the current year surpassed that record by +9.6%.


Top 5 Markets and China

• Japanese arrivals for January-June 2007 (158,881) improved +48.43% over 2006 and came in only -5.6% behind the best first-half-year recorded for Japanese visitors when 168,392 came to Bali in 2000.

• Australian arrivals for the first-half of 2007 also improved, up +51.56% for the year. While Australian arrivals were trending into positive territory, current arrivals still lag some -34.2% behind 2005 when 130,875 Australian came to Bali during the January-June period.

• Taiwanese arrivals improved +3.2% during the first half of 2007. Suggesting there's stillroom for improvement is the fact that the current year is still -25.95% behind Taiwan's best first-half recorded in 2002 (97,329).

• 2007 set a dynamic new pace for South Korean arrivals improving +71.25% over the previous year – making 2007 the best-first-half-ever in Bali for arrivals from that market.

• 2007 also saw visitors from mainland China move into major-market-segment-territory, improving +89.92% over the previous year.


ASEAN

ASEAN arrivals improved +34.9% for the first six months of 2007 underlining the growing role played by low-cost regional airlines in Bali's arrival totals. Within the ASEAN market, Malaysia and Singapore were star performers improving +49% and +6%, respectively, for the first six months of 2007.


The Americas and Key European Markets

• While arrivals from the Americas, comprised of visitors from all of North and South America, grew +18.14% for January-June 2007, those numbers still lagged -31.94% behind totals from this market achieved in 2001 (57,053).

• Similarly, U.K. arrivals improved +6.7% for the first-half of 2007, but still need to play a game of major catch-up to perform at levels achieved in 2001. The current year's arrivals for January-June are -47.08% behind the 55,933 U.K. visitors who came to Bali in the first semester of 2001.

• German arrivals for January-June improved +5.2% for 2007. But, there's still a long road to travel before German arrivals begin to match performance levels in 2001; current first semester levels are -28.67% behind 2001 (41,150).

• French arrival are hitting record-territory, improving +12.1% in the first half of 2007.

• Equally impressive is the picture painted by The Netherlands, which turned in the "best ever" first-half-year, improving +41.1% over the same period in 2006.

• Meanwhile, Russia has now firmly established itself as a "new player" in Bali tourism, recording 18,473 visitors during the first half of 2007; rising dramatically from just 7 years before when Russian visitors to Bali were at totals "near to nothing."
